Standard Chartered still expects the stablecoin market to reach $2 trillion, but now sees it happening in 2030 rather than 2028. Total supply has stayed between $300 billion and $320 billion for the past 12 months and is currently about $309 billion. The bank calls the stall cyclical and links it to weak crypto trading.

Usage tells a different story. Onchain transfer value hit a monthly record of $19 trillion in May, and monthly volume has averaged just under $10 trillion in 2026, up from $4 trillion in 2025. Average stablecoin velocity has roughly doubled to about 30 times a month. USDC turns over about 80 times a month, compared with about 7 times for USDT.

The bank names the US GENIUS Act, due to take effect in January 2027, as a major risk to the forecast, especially if other countries copy its approach.
