Coinbase said on October 22 that AI agents can now trade in customer accounts. Users can connect assistants including ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Perplexity and Muse and place trades in crypto, US stocks and ETFs, and derivatives from a single conversation.

The connection runs through Coinbase's MCP server. After logging in, users choose which portfolios an assistant can reach, can preview orders before they execute and can disconnect the agent at any time. A September update had already added US stocks, ETFs and x402 payments, which let agents pay for market data from a user's USDC balance.

Coinbase recommends trading through a separate portfolio funded only with money you can afford to lose. Risks include misread instructions, prompt injection and overly broad permissions. The company has not disclosed fees or usage numbers for the feature.
